V2 Question Type: Text Field and Text Area

The Textbox and Text Area can be used to collect text, and will accept any alphanumeric, numeric, or special characters.

Text Field

The Textbox control type allows the user to enter a single line of data, limited to 255 characters.  It is used for most questions where answers will be reasonably short such as names or addresses.

Compatible Data Types: Simple Text, Email Address, URL, Phone Number, Integer, Decimal, Currency.

Text Field Properties: This may vary depending on the data type chosen. Below are the options for the Simple Text data type.

  • Validation Type: 
  • User's username as default value: Set the user's username as the initial value for the question.
  • Default Value: Set the initial value for the question.
  • Keyboard Type: Set the Mobile Input Type.

Text Area

The Text Area control type allows the user to enter multiple lines of data, limited to 4000 characters.  It allows the user to see a large amount of text at one time and is often used to capture notes or comments in the field.  If enabled, users can use voice to text to fill text areas. It can be used with Digit Extraction or String Concatenation.

Compatible Data Types: N/A (Text).

Text Area Properties: 

  • Validation Type: Validation allows you to check what information is being entered in a question and prevent incorrect data entry. There are a number of pre-configured validation types: Non-accented letters only, no spaces; non-accented letters and numbers only, no spaces; Canadian postal code; US zip code; custom (uses Regular Expressions).
  • User's username as default value: Set the user's username as the initial value for the question.
  • Default Value: Set the initial value for the question.
  • Keyboard Type: Set the Mobile Input Type. This means that you can select a particular type of mobile keyboard: for example, if it is a question that uses more numbers than letters, use a number keyboard as the default.

Available Restrictions: 

  • Required: Required questions must be answered before proceeding to the next page of a form or submitting a form. If a user attempts to move to the next page or submit the form without answering a Required question, an error message will appear advising the user that there are unanswered Required questions.
  • Read Only: Read Only questions cannot be edited on mobile devices.  These fields usually either contain data filled out by an administrator in the case of a dispatched form, or are auto-populated/pre-filled based on selections made earlier in the form.
  • Hidden on Device: Hidden on Device questions cannot be seen by mobile users. These questions may contain sensitive information, or data used by questions later in the form.
  • Hidden on Reports: Hidden on Reports questions are not kept on completed documents, and are not saved.
