Scan barcodes with front facing camera

Just like the iOS application, we'd like to be able to scan barcodes using the front facing camera on android.

Thanks

Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

To confirm -- are you asking to be able to scan barcodes with the "selfie" camera?

If so, I would love to understand what kind of barcode you are scanning and for what purpose. I think we're generally imagining that you're scanning a barcode on a piece of equipment, and that it would be easier to use the rear-facing camera for that.  But, there might be an interaction in the field that we haven't considered!

    Hi Danielle,

    Thanks for coming back.

That's right.  Some of our inspections require us to scan hundreds of parts in one go.  The cases of our android tabs allow them to be propped up in the landscape format (almost like a point of sale terminal) and it would be far easier for the parts to be picked up and scanned instead of manipulating the tab.

    Thanks

FYI, these are automotive parts. Say, for instance, a box of 50 clocks that you might find the centre dashboard of your car.

    Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the insight!  There are a few "environmental" factors in there that we don't always see!

What kind of Android tablets are those?   My worry is, not all devices have a front-facing camera with the auto-focus that is required to focus on and scan a barcode -- some devices only have it on the rear-facing camera.

    Hi,

No worries; trust us to use the service a little different to everyone else.

These are Galaxy Tab A6 (SM-T285).  I've just taken a few quick pictures and it seems to be OK.

We wouldn't be averse to upgrading some tablets for this feature if it was required.

    Thanks

    Hi Nathan!

To get back to you on this... on Android, we actually use a 3rd-party barcode scanner so we don't have control over the barcode scanning options.   On iOS, we've built some custom barcode scanning capabilities, which is why scanning with the front-facing camera is supported.

So, unfortunately, the change on Android would not be as small as I had hoped, as it would likely require us to build custom barcode-scanning capabilities into our Android application.

    Morning Danielle,

Thank you for looking into this for me.

I shall look forward to the day pronto no longer rely on third party apps.

    Hi Nathan,

As of ProntoForms for Android 9.4.1, we no longer need the 3rd party app for barcode scanning and can use the front or back cameras to scan.

Please note, this does require you to be using the in-app camera rather than the third party/"External" barcode scanner. If you're still being redirected to the Android Barcode scanner by the ProntoForms app:

    1. Save your Draft and exit out of the form
    2. Go to the app's Settings,
    3. Select Advanced
    4. Make sure that the checkbox next to "External Barcode Scanner" is unchecked.
    5. Exit out of settings and resume working on your draft form submission.

I hope this helps your folks in the field. Please let us know if you have any feedback.
